MORTAR MIX TYPE S is a quality blend of fine masons sand, portland cement, and lime. It is used to build brick, stone, and block walls, and can be used as a stucco scratch and base coat.
Roman Mortar Mix is also used to tuckpoint mortar joints. Roman Mortar Mix is designed to exceed the specifications of ASTM C 387 and C 270 for Type S Mortar/Stucco.
Compressive Strength:
28 day 1,800 psi (12 MPa) Water Retention 75%
Mixing:
One 80 lb. (36.4 kg) bag will require up to 4 quarts (3.7 L) of water. Thoroughly mix the contents of the bag with the water, adding a little at a time if the mix is too stiff. Adding too
much water will weaken the mix and may cause cracking in the surface.
Finishing:
Butter the ends of the brick or block with the mortar and place them into a bed of mortar. Level while gently tapping into place. When used in tuckpointing, after compaction into the joint,
allow the fresh mortar to set before striking with a jointer tool.
Curing:
Keep the placed material damp in hot weather conditions to aid curing. Protect the mortar from freezing for at least 24 hours after placement.
Coverage:
One 80 lb. (36.4 kg) bag will lay about 44 standard brick or 16 – 8 inch concrete blocks.
One 80 lb. (36.4 kg) will cover about 72 sq. ft. at 1/8 inch thick.
